Azoospermia Treatment in Cyprus

Azoospermia, considered one of the most challenging conditions of male infertility, has become a treatable condition today thanks to advancing microsurgical methods and high-tech laboratory facilities. Op. Dr. Emine Efendi, with modern treatment protocols applied in Cyprus, makes the chance of becoming a biological father possible again for men who have no sperm in their semen.

What is Azoospermia?

Azoospermia is the condition where no live or dead sperm cells are found in the semen as a result of a sperm analysis (spermiogram). This condition is examined under two main headings:

  • Obstructive Azoospermia: Sperm production exists, but it cannot exit due to blockages in the ducts.

  • Non-Obstructive Azoospermia: The absence or near-absence of sperm production due to reasons such as genetic factors, hormonal problems, or undescended testes.

Azoospermia Treatment Methods in Cyprus

In our clinic in Cyprus, surgical and medical solutions aimed at the cause are offered for patients diagnosed with azoospermia:

  1. Hormone Therapy: Production is triggered in patients where a hormonal deficiency is detected.

  2. Surgical Sperm Retrieval (TESE/Micro-TESE): Methods that allow obtaining sperm directly from the testicular tissue.

  3. TESA/PESA: Extraction of sperm from the duct or testis via needle aspiration (usually in cases of obstruction).

Who Can Receive Azoospermia Treatment?

Every man with no sperm output in his semen is a candidate for these treatments after a detailed urological examination and genetic screening. Especially many patients who were told “you can’t have children” in the past can reach their own genetic cells with advanced techniques like Micro-TESE.

How are TESE and Micro-TESE Performed in Cyprus?

Micro-TESE is the most advanced surgical method with proven success in azoospermia treatment:

  • Procedure: In an operating room setting, testicular tissue is examined under a microscope at high magnification.

  • Advantage: Instead of taking large tissue samples, only “plump” tubules where sperm production is likely are selected and removed.

  • Result: Maximum chance of finding sperm is achieved while causing minimum damage to the testicular tissue.

Azoospermia Treatment Success Rates Cyprus

Success rates vary according to the type of azoospermia. In cases due to obstruction, the chance of finding sperm is near 100%. In cases of production disorder (non-obstructive), our success rate in finding sperm with the Micro-TESE method is at world standards, around 50-60%. Even a single healthy sperm found can be enough for pregnancy.

IVF Process After Azoospermia Treatment

Sperm obtained through surgical methods are simultaneously injected into eggs collected from the expectant mother using the ICSI (Microinjection) method. If a transfer is not planned at that moment or if there is excess sperm, these cells can be frozen and stored for future use.

Are There Risks to Azoospermia Treatment?

Surgical sperm retrieval procedures (TESE/Micro-TESE) are generally minor surgical interventions. Mild pain or swelling may occur after the procedure, but patients are usually discharged on the same day and can return to their daily lives shortly. The risk of infection or bleeding is at a minimum in our sterile clinical environment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes, it can be applied to every patient who has no sperm in their semen and wants to become a biological father, after a preliminary evaluation.

For the male patient, the surgical procedure is a single day. However, if it is to be carried out simultaneously with the IVF process, a period of 5-7 days is ideal.

If live sperm cells cannot be obtained with Micro-TESE, couples are provided with detailed information about alternative treatment options such as sperm donation.

Due to patient comfort and the sensitivity of the procedure (use of a microscope), it is generally preferred to be performed under mild general anesthesia (sedation).
